Maintaining strong, healthy strands can be a battle. (Look at what we’ve got to combat: humidity, heat, chlorine, saltwater and UV rays!). In our quest for beautiful bounce, we’ve applied a variety of oils, washed far less frequently and rinsed with hot tea. Thankfully, our trials have resulted in some valuable successes. Here are our tricks:
Tame the Greasies With Dry Shampoo
This is an easy way to keep grease and sweat your dirty little
secret between weekly washings. It’s also a great volumizer and texturizer.
Never Shampoo Before Swimming
Washing hair can strip it of protective oils that leave it much more vulnerable to damage from chlorine and the sun. You should shampoo as soon as possible after exiting the pool. If that’s not possible, at least rinse your locks under the shower.
Give Your Locks Some Love With Leave-in Hydrators
Protect hair from the hot sun by coating strands with an ultra-conditioning leave-in before you hit the beach. Try fast-absorbing argan oil for a moisture boost (read more about it here). Braiding hair will further protect it. For moisture and shine, douse ends with conditioner before leaving the house each morning. Before bed, apply throughout hair for an extra dose of hydration.
Revive Hair With a Weekly Mask
Hair masks are a great way to rejuvenate severely dry or damaged hair. You can find several easy-to-use options at your drugstore.
Cover Up With Clever Accessories
Hats and headscarves may not be your ideal fashion statement, but trust us, damaged hair is never in style. If accessorizing isn’t your thing, spritz strands with an SPF-enhanced mist before any sun exposure. We like Care for Hair Sun Protector from Smart Girls Who Surf, which detangles and defrizzes too.
