Ask the Expert Elena Umland, PharmD Q: What type of thermometer is best for babies, toddlers, and older children? A: According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a rectal thermometer is best for infants and children under three. Although it may be slightly uncomfortable for your child, a rectal thermometer allows for the greatest accuracy. Before using (and after), be sure to clean thoroughly with rubbing alcohol or soap and water. Prior to insertion, lubricate the thermometer with petroleum jelly. If you decide to use an under-arm thermometer, be sure to add one degree to the reading. Once children reach the age of four or five, it is fine to switch to an oral thermometer. Remember, digital thermometers are now widely sold -- even rectal varieties. Mercury thermometers are unsafe and should be discarded.
