Ask the Expert

Kathryn Lee, RN, PhD

Q: After our baby's feeding in the middle of the night, my husband falls fast asleep and I lay awake for an hour. How can I sleep like he does?

A: Yes, many moms will find themselves wistfully staring at her husband who is sound asleep seconds after the baby's early morning cries. That is, if he has woken up at all. Sometimes the jealousy and frustration are so consuming that falling back asleep is that much harder.

If you can, it is best to breastfeed your baby, especially during the night time feedings. When you breastfeed you produce the hormone prolactin, which promotes a deeper sleep.

In addition, when you wake up in the middle of the night to feed your baby, avoid turning on the TV or the computer. Try to use a night light instead of turning on the room's main light. The exposure to light is stimulating, making it harder to fall asleep.
