Ask the Expert

Donna Smallin, organizing strategist and book author

Q: What's the best way to keep matched clothing items together for my husband and children?

A: Advise your husband to hang each dress shirt with its corresponding tie as soon as the shirt comes back from the cleaners, so he doesn't have to search for a proper match first thing in the morning (and more to the point, neither do you)!

When you're putting away your children's clothes, you can put matched outfits folded together in their drawers. However, if coordinating laundry sounds like a nightmare, there's another solution. When you shop for their clothing, try to keep all your purchases color coordinated. For example, you can stick to blues, grays, and denims for boys and pinks and purples for girls. This is especially convenient for little ones who insist on picking their own clothes each morning. This way, whatever they pick is a safe bet.
