Ask the Expert

Kathryn Lee, RN, PhD

Q: Are there natural methods that help promote better sleep?

A: Yes, there are tried-and-true healthy methods for achieving better sleep. It doesn't get any more natural than good old-fashioned exercise. Get plenty of exercise throughout the day, preferably outdoors -- the more light you get in the daytime, the deeper and calmer your sleep will be in the evening. If you can, squeeze in a workout in the morning, or go for a walk during lunch.

When it's close to bedtime, you might try some of your grandmother's old tricks -- warm milk, a turkey sandwich, or peanut butter on toast. Consuming a healthy protein snack in the evening can work wonders on a good night's sleep.
