Ask the Expert

Donna Smallin, organizing strategist and book author

Q: I like using different purses, but moving my stuff from bag to bag is such a pain. Is there an easy way?

A: The solution to this one is fairly simple. If you organize the items in your purse into several small compartments, then all you have to do is switch the small containers from purse to purse. Buy a cute set of matching cosmetics bags, or simply use Ziploc baggies. Remember, transparent bags work best. Stick to the basics -- of course makeup goes in a cosmetics bag, and money and credit cards go in a wallet. But the rest of your items can be organized too! For example, try putting aspirin and other medications in a plastic case. If you use hair ties, carry them in a zipper pouch. Put gum and breath mints in their own small bag. You can designate a bag for receipts, but be careful -- walking around with old receipts can clutter a purse fast. Make time every week to clean your purse and file or toss receipts.
